In large communities, it can be difficult to distinguish just one leader. Each individual offers his or her own form of leadership through knowledge and experience. When entering a new community, it is important to consider what has already been established in order to lead new initiatives. When approaching communities such as New Brunswick, one of the major keys to success is to provide resources, but to also then step back and watch them unfold. When it comes to technology, it is often beneficial to allow people to try it out for themselves, and to then encourage them to seek help in specific areas as needed. Here are some important steps to follow when introducing a new platform to a developing community:

1. Exposure:

Technology is a relatively broad topic. So, when introducing it, you want to make sure that you are able to present it in a way that is relatable to a large portion of the individuals who are going to use it. For example, when it comes to students in high school, it is vital to introduce them to ways in which they can conduct group projects, and to find information about applying for college. This initial exposure is simple, but it can make a great difference as individuals begin to implement the use of technology into their everyday lives.

2. Application:

After exposing the various resources that technology can offer, you want to make sure everyone that you are helping to provide an understanding of how to navigate its various functions. This is the time to step back and watch things unfold; allow people to complete a task, and then ask about their experiences. This approach promotes both the development of skill and a sense of independence.

3. Feedback:

Offering feedback is critical for everyone involved in the process. As a teacher, this step can help to improve upon delivery of concepts and instructions, while also consolidating one’s own understanding of the material. Feedback also provides those who are learning with an opportunity to share any concerns, opinions, or points of confusion. For instance, it is important to consider whether you, as the teacher, are moving at an appropriate pace, explaining things thoroughly enough, or conveying information that will create and maintain a lasting impression.

4. Correction:

After providing information and reviewing feedback, it is time to put everything into perspective. This is the step in which you can adjust and improve for the future. For instance, what can be better explained next time? Does everyone understand how to navigate the application that they are using? By learning through a dialogic approach to teaching others, it becomes possible to make an even greater impact in the community.
